Today, the Media Reform Coordinating Group-Sierra Leone (MRCG) participated in the final validation of the National Media and Information Policy. The policy applies to Print, Electronic (Broadcasting), Wire Services, Advertising, Public Relations, and Social media, and it is central to consolidating the government’s gains and ensuring an effective and efficient media and information society.
The policy is also built on a firm foundation of fundamental principles such as the right to access information, freedom of expression and the press, human dignity and self-actualization, and democratic good governance. It is also anchored on the various policy directives outlined by the government.
The policy’s vision is “To attain a media and information ecosystem that is proactive, progressive, and participatory and that can contribute to national transformation and development.” Its mission is “Promoting and ensuring a free, independent, progressive, and innovative media and information ecosystem that will provide timely and accurate information and feedback.”
The Policy contextualizes provisions in international human rights instruments, national laws, and codes that promote rights to information and freedom of information. It considers the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the Sustainable Development Goals (Goal 16, Target 16. A), which seeks to ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms by national legislation and international agreement.
The MRCG is excited to have joined the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), and all other media stakeholders and organizations in contributing immensely to the document, from the drafting stage.
