COMPREHENSIVE NATIONAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE SAFETY OF JOURNALISTS IN SIERRA LEONE

This document is the Comprehensive National Framework for the Safety of
Journalists in Sierra Leone. It aims at improving press freedom, safety of journalists
and countering impunity for crimes against journalists in the country. It was developed
through a joint process involving media and state actors, and it spells out the roles and
responsibilities of all actors.


The Framework constitutes justification for the need for a National Coordination
Committee for the Safety of Journalists in Sierra Leone, an outline of the media
landscape in the country, an overview of the landscape of media freedom in the
country, an analysis of the situation of journalists’ safety in the country, the processes
leading to the establishment of the Sierra Leone National Coordination Committee
for the Safety of Journalists, its composition and structure, role, activities and
operation of the committee. The Framework also comprises the objectives and
outcomes of the National Safety Mechanism for Journalists in Sierra Leone as well as
the role and intervention areas of essential stakeholders.
