ABOUT US

The Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) is a civil society organization dedicated to promoting media development, press freedom, and good governance. Established in 2014, the MRCG works to strengthen the media landscape by advocating for policy reforms, enhancing journalists’ capacity, and ensuring accountability in media practice.

Key Objectives of MRCG:
1. Media Policy & Legal Reforms – Advocating for laws that protect press freedom and freedom of expression.
2. Journalists’ Safety & Protection – Monitoring attacks on journalists and lobbying for their safety.
3. Media Self-Regulation– Promoting ethical journalism through the Independent Media Commission (IMC) and the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).
4. Capacity Building– Providing training for journalists on investigative reporting, digital security, and media ethics.
5. Research & Advocacy– Conducting studies on media trends and advocating for transparency in media ownership.

Notable Initiatives:
– Media Viability & Sustainability – Supporting financially sustainable media outlets.
– Election Reporting– Ensuring fair and balanced media coverage during elections.
– Collaboration with International Partners– Working with organizations like EU, NED, ATJLF, MRGA, IMS, MFWA etc. 

The MRCG is a Coordinating Secretariat comprising the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), the Faculty of Communication, Media and Information Studies (Fourah Bay College), the Independent Media Commission (IMC), the Ministry of Information and Civic Education (MoICE), the Guild of Editors (GoE), Women in the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL), Independent Radio Network (IRN), Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU), Sport Writers Association of Sierra (SWASAL) and the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).
